I was born in the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia, as it was called in the “olden days”). My grandma lived with us and she DID wear a wig! It looked just like the brown, football-helmet-shaped wig I drew on the covers of my books. (I thought of using my grandma’s actual wig for my book covers but that looked WAY too creepy!) I was VERY intrigued by my grandma’s wig when I was a kid because I didn’t know anyone else who wore a wig back then.
My family came to the U.S. when I was 10 years old so I started 5th grade not just in a new school but in a new country. I probably don’t need to tell you that 5th grade was pretty tough.
I love to read and write. I always did. You don’t have to write to be a reader but you definitely have to read to be a writer.
I went to The University of Illinois where I got my bachelor’s degree. I studied in Paris for a year – my awesome junior year abroad. And then I ALMOST got a master’s degree from The School of the Art Institute in Chicago. (Don’t ask.)
These days, in between books, I’m busy running around with my three young kids. The youngest one is FINALLY out of diapers!!!
We also have a French Bulldog named Zoe. She sleeps all day and snores really loud.
I’m also married to a very nice man who accepts me for who I am and tolerates most of my crazy habits. (That’s VERY important !!!) BTW, he snores too but he’s not as bad as our bulldog.
We live in the Chicago area.
